{"id":3657,"date":"2021-01-19T09:44:08","date_gmt":"2021-01-19T09:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/companyofanimals.co.uk\/?p=3657"},"modified":"2023-11-06T20:38:58","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T20:38:58","slug":"dos-and-donts-for-house-training-a-puppy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/companyofanimals.com\/uk\/dos-and-donts-for-house-training-a-puppy\/","title":{"rendered":"Do&#8217;s and Don&#8217;ts for House Training a Puppy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s plenty to think about when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">puppy training and sometimes it can be a little overwhelming.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Here\u2019s just a few of the Do\u2019s and Don\u2019ts <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when learning how to toilet train a puppy:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> praise <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> puppy enthusiastically whenever they get it right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> put a command word to \u2018performances\u2019 i.e. \u201cBe clean\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> take puppy out frequently to toilet<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/companyofanimals.com\/uk\/brand-product\/puppy-training-lead\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">puppy training houseline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or lead to encourage <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> puppy outside rather than carrying them. This way they will eventually learn to take themselves there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use a product to clean up accidents that is specifically designed for the job. Ammonia based products may actually encourage <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> puppy to return to the area again, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so it\u2019s best to avoid cleaning products with ammonia in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> learn to watch for tell-tale signs that puppy needs to go i.e. sniffing and circling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> punish your puppy for toileting in the house, they are likely to associate the punishment with toileting in your presence, not for their mistake. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this happens, they could end up making a bad habit of toileting in the house in future when you\u2019re out of the room instead of going outside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leave <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> puppy in the garden alone and presume they have toileted, stay and watch. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This way you can praise them at exactly the right time as well as feeling assured that they have actually toileted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expect the puppy to signal that they need to go out. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a learnt behaviour for a toilet training puppy, not something that they will naturally do without training.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expect <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> puppy to go for long periods <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without toileting, they need to be given a place or opportunity to relieve themselves regularly even at night-time,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just like potty training a child. As your puppy grows and gains better bladder control, gradually extend the time between potty breaks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remove puppy\u2019s water at night to prevent peeing, they need constant access to fresh water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feed puppy too close to bedtime, it will just make them need to poop approximately an hour later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, toilet training a puppy involves establishing a consistent routine, using positive reinforcement, and being patient.
